Most pretentious movies thread...
I just saw the film about Bob Dillian (sp) made with five different actors "I'm Not There" and just about turned inside out from my eyes rolling back so hard. Except for the amazing scene of Christian Bale as Preacher Man singing his sermon Dillian, and David Cross as Gisburg, everybody in this film can get an AIDs blood tranfusion ASAP- especially Kate who's Bob imitation ment talking like a midget
I really can't think of any worse then that right now, what are you're least/most favorites?

Wow, I thought the exact opposite. I know nothing of Dylan, nothing at all, but I really enjoyed that film and thought Cate blew everyone else off the screen.
Charming movie.
I tend to avoid films I think I might hate. Mr John - not going to see Speed Racer anytime soon.

I've never understood how someone can criticise directing - what does "bad directing" mean? How can we quantify what it is? Surely the job of the director is done during filming, off camera, therefore invisible?HALE-BOPP";p="956760 wrote:I guess I can honestly say that it was the script and the directing that made me slash my wrists

V for Vendetta was pretentious and perhaps ludicrously so: but it was also fun
These Batman movies...well, they just strike me as sour, take themselves seriously Hollywood turds
That the moron had to die because he was 'method acting' for one them is tragic
and I'll say it again: the batmobile looks like a lump of shit on wheels

Everything the director does is visible. We see only what he intends. He guides our eye. "Camera Stylo". Bad directing is when he does this in a poor manner. Sure he would hire a cinematogropher and often would get someone to arrange the mise en scene, but he is ultimately responsible for the finished article.Mr John Vista";p="956801 wrote:I've never understood how someone can criticise directing - what does "bad directing" mean? Perhaps you are right though...there should be a distinction between an auteur and a mere director...

Aside from the auteur discussion, bad directing can take several forms. As above, the director is in charge of making the most important decisions (other than those to do with funding, in most cases).
Some clear pointers in relation to directing actors:
A good actor appears to turns in a shocker - Most likely poor direction.
A crap actor turns in an Oscar nomination - Great direction.
... and let's not talk about Tarantino.

What do you mean by it was "Badly Directed"? What technique used put you off? I'm just interested in what you saw that I didn't.

Well, what is good acting? Convincing charactor portrayal? I've seen Antony Hopkins in some shockingly bad roles that have driven me to distraction, yet he is highly rated.judasmuppet";p="957458 wrote:Aside from the auteur discussion, bad directing can take several forms. Directing seems to be a massive management job - documentaries I've seen about moviemakers potray them take different slants. George Lucas drives the story and the visuals, Michael Bay works like a drill sergeant, Jim Cameron is an obssesive with details...I think we all know where those three examples fall short.
Kubrick, however, some of his films made me want to make films.

Hopkins makes a lot of poor choices. You would think he has enough experience to smell a turkey, but he keeps doing it.
It's hard to talk about good directing and acting in relation to Lucas, Bay and Cameron. To a certain extent the acting doesn't matter in their films.
An odd example to use might be Spielberg directing Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds. Cruise turned in a good performance, but he did a lot of it from looking at computer simulations of the scenes he was about to do just before doing his own take. Make of that what you will.

Well, that's a case of an actor wanting to know what he is working with, it's very practical!
Interestingly enough, many actors have criticised Cruise for being hard to work with, as he does not make the same effort for off-camera takes - i.e for their close ups.
Hopkins himself said this after MI2. Maybe that would be an example of bad directing, Cruise should have been told to make a fucking effort.
