Underrated films
In this thread I want you to name films that you find to be overlooked, and not greatly appreciated like they should.
Here are some films I find underrated:
Punch Drunk Love: Many people refuse to watch this because of Adam Sandler. Its a shame, but their loss.
Eyes Wide Shut: Kubricks last film is also his most criticized. I dont get it... Everytime I watch it, I find it to be perfect.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape: Everyone whos seen this, can agree that its a good film. But its often overlooked.
U-Turn: Oliver Stones last good film.
Buffalo '66: Vincent Gallo is a fuckhead, but this movie is brilliant.
Ed Wood: Tim Burtons best, no doubt. Im actually glad that I can have this film "for myself", and dont have to share it with 16 year old fat goths. Fine, you stole The Nightmare Before Christmas... But stay the fuck away from Ed Wood.
Boogie Nights: Great epic about the Porn Industry. Marky Mark convinced me after that one.
Ghost World: Great little "chick flick" from director Terry Zwigoff. Also check out his documentary on Robert Crumb, called "Crumb".
Spun: Looks like a music video... but a great one. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, just so you know what to expect.
The Beach: Not many people like this one. Its not great, but still a bit underr... oh never mind... Im having trouble coming up with more films.

I'm with you on that Punch-Drunk Love
I also like the Coen Brothers' non-Lebowski, non-O-Brother movies. Like the Ladykillers. or the Hudsucker Proxy...

Eyes wide shut, Punch drunk love and Ed wood. Those are great movies, and at least Eyes wide Shut has got to be in my top 50.
That said, I don't really know what films are greatly underrated. Do you mean like not popular? Not recieved well by critics? Not winning awards? What about Passolini? He's probably underrated

Punch Drunk love was intolerable. Boo fucking hoo with poor acting. Sleepless In Seattle for people under forty. Way overrated.
I liked Ed Wood.
Boogie Nights got so much hype and failed to deliver. It was just like Blow if you ask me. Utter tripe that wishes it was Goodfellas.

I mean that movies that I think should have been more greatly appreciated by people like us. Punch Drunk probably did well with the critics, but failed with the audience. Just like Donny Darko or Memento (before they recently established cult status).Redundant user";p="899383 wrote:Eyes wide shut, Punch drunk love and Ed wood. I would call Passolini underrated. He has his audience if you know what I mean. Thats why they are releasing his films in beautiful digipacs these days (Ive only seen Salò myself). Its not for everyone, but still not underrated.
Boogie Nights and Blow are very similar I guess. Boogie Nights was made before Blow though. I like em both.Namothy Tsao";p="899402 wrote:Punch Drunk love was intolerable. Boo fucking hoo with poor acting. Sleepless In Seattle for people under forty. Way overrated.

How is Punch Drunk love overrated? No one rated it...
Ghost World is probably somewhat a cult film. I havent heard many people talk about Boogey Nights, but maybe its hyped. I dont know.touchy feely";p="899408 wrote:there is nothing underrated about ghost world or boogie nights... those movies have been talked about to death
i really really liked american splendor and nobody i know has seen it/wants to see it.. disappointing
American Splendor is indeed underrated. Paul Giamatti is great as Harvey Pekar. I also a bit of a Robert Crumb fan.

That song that they play in that film with the chick singing?
Makes me want to eat puppies and shit out hamburger buns.
yeah, I love that so much
especially when the light on the pay phone goes on.
P.T. Anderson makes some charming as hell film.

there's so much in that movie I really love
I saw that shit in the theatre, and it was moving.
