I gave this film plenty of time. I don't see how watching part II would improve my opinion of it. The homage angle is a major aspect of the film, but not the only thing I judged it on. Other points we disagree on also include: direction and action. I.e. you think they were good, and I think they wer...

I read Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" before I read Brave New World. I loved Stranger, and highly recommend it for that period of Sci-Fi novels, but I thought BNW acheived more with less.

No I'm not kidding. Kill Bill was utter crap. No redeaming features (with the notable exception of the animated sequence). It just doesn't work. It's a less than mediocre homage to a multitude of different genres and movies therein.

I've only watched one non-Chinese/HK Jet Li movie, being Romeo Must Die. I won't make the same mistake twice. Though apparently, The One is interesting in terms of the different fighting styles used by the two characters.

Jet Li

I'm going to start a large ramble about my appreciation for Jet Li films soon.

Be warned.

Sin City didn't have any cohesion for me. It wasn't even "episodic" in a good way. It's like Kill Bill in it's shitness.

Of those I've only read Catch-22, Slaughterhouse 5, Brave New World, and A Clockwork Orange (before I saw the movie).

I vote for Hearts of Darkness, even though I've only read bits and pieces.

I'm currently reading DeLillo's Underworld.

*shrugs*

I've made it twice, and I liked it a lot. I rarely eat seafood, and I never eat paella otherwise. I probably could handle some prawns in it if I was involved in the purchasing and preparation, but this suits me just fine.

But is it paella?

Chorizo Paella Ingredients: 2 tbs olive oil 1 chorizo sausage, thinly sliced (I use two) 1 green capsicum (bell pepper), halved, deseeded, finely chopped 1 zucchini, thinly sliced 1 brown onion, halved, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, peeled, thinly sliced 1 tsp paprika 500g long-grain brown rice 1 x...

I read somewhere once that purple was the colour of the sexually-deprived. I've never heard anything about it since, so I can't comment as to its authenticity as a science.

Guillermo del Toro

I finally saw Hellboy last night, and like it very muchly. I though it had the right measure and balance of all things for a gritty comic-based movie, unlike that piece of shit Sin City. Hellboy 2 is slated for next year. del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth" should be showing up in the next couple...

Tokyo Story is "important" as an influential and ground breaking film, in terms of technique. But quite simply, it is tedious. I watched it in stages, because there was a fair bit to be learnt from a film-history POV. 8½ is on my shelf, waiting to be watched. La Règle du jeu I want to see.

Do it. Truly bizzare. You'll end up saying "pizza for cat" randomly, like the best of them.

Fun fact: 32 different DPs

Same director as Alexandra's Project (mentioned above).

Of the top three, I really don't think any of them are THAT great. Technically accomplished for their time, and influential as all buggery, but Vertigo really isn't that fantastic to be so far out in front (I much prefer North-by-Northwest), and Citizen Kane has dated a fair bit in my opinion. This ...
