Zappa

New music isn't going to entertain me, so can anyone recommend a good place to start with Frank Zappa? I've been reading a bio of him recently, which is all over the place, but makes me want to check him out, as my drummer keeps wanting us to cover "Flakes".
I like Captain Beefheart, especially "Trout Mask Replica" (Pena, Ella Guru) and "Clear Spot", whether or not this affects your suggestions, is entirely up to you...

for my fill of the comedic lyrics/entertaining musicianship, I turn to
sheik yerbouti.
for the "out there"/great musicianship + inside joke samples, I go to
uncle meat, although...
the second disc is 99% useless. see: the audio samples from the incomplete movie get
boring or even aggravating quick to MHO.
if I am looking for a work of "recorded collage performance art" (*puke geyser*) aka bleep, blip,
fuzzoink, reeeem, shabon!, twazz, cut & paste, I reach for
lumpy gravy.
when I am high horsing it into chamber music ala zappa, I get classy(cal). I reach for the
yellow shark.
I would have put
joe's garage on here too as I like that one,
but I do not want to get darkus started on what zappa's voice
on that one does to him physically.

Don't listen to this ^ idiot...
Frank Zappa's 3 greatest albums are:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe_%28%27%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over-Nite_Sensation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Size_Fits_All
Then I suggest you go back to the beginning and check out Freak Out!...and keep going from there.
Stay away from his 80s studio stuff, for now anyway. The only 80s era album I rate, apart from the live releases, is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_Arriv ... ning_Witch
In all honesty though, as a great starting point I would recommend:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Best_B ... _Your_Life
Fantastic live album...which covers a lot of ground of Zappas vast catalogue...

My LP copy of 'Roxy & Elsewhere' is probably the best thing I've heard from Zappa...
There's very few Zappa albums that I enjoy from start to finish...

Whatever you do, don't go see Dweezil Zappa plays Zappa live.
One of my most painful concert experiences.

well the baby snakes is a pretty good concert thing with some bizzare animation . it looks very dated , if you know the music it helps a lot ! bozzio is in it , and belew wears a dress .
ive seen some newer concert vid with the 80's band that i enjoyed a bit more . im sure i will take some flack for that , but hey . some of the stuff , to me , is lol funny , the in jokes , and banter / stage antics . at times they throw things out / change words and frank will loose it , its interesting to see the band working / doing things different live too . a real treat as far a concert films , top notch stuff .
200 motels , that one is really hard at first but it totally grew on me , i watched it at least a dozen times , painfull at first , but i actually really dig it now . i spose it helps if you are really really messed up on a few things .
still pissed they never did anything with thing fish , but like i said its so unbelievably filthy , it would a been xxx rated .
