Mel Brooks (in general)

Yeah so anyway, I watched Space Balls with my missus last night (or half of it at least) and I came to the incredible realisation that Mel Brooks is possibly the most unfunny man to have ever made a movie… or series of movies.

I remember kids running around the schoolyard quoting Space Balls dialogue and thinking that it was a hoot, but my memory is obviously crazy. Compared to his Monty Python contemporaries (who have some serious low points themselves) Mel Brooks’ portfolio consists of a series of cinematic turds.

His own (self-portrayed) characters are all tired, repetitive, obvious celebrations of Jewish quirkiness. Bearing witness to the pregnant pauses as he and the other characters deliver their punchlines directly to the camera is just…. painful.

Anyway, this may all be really [/obvious], but I just wanted to share my disgust with you all. Anyone who finds Mel Brooks funny should be neutered and enslaved in some kind of underground concentration camp.

Cheers.

Yeah.

I saw bits of that Denton interview recently. Unfunny. Denton did really well to appear to be wetting himself over fart jokes.

Mel is awful. But he is also the guy who forced David Lynch into directing The Elephant Man, after watching Eraserhead. And The Elephant Man was the movie that allowed him to do Dune. Lynch didnt want to do Dune, but someone promised him cash to make Blue Velvet if he did Dune first. After Blue Velvet, he could pretty much do anything he wanted.

So no Mel Brooks=no David Lynch

....maybe.

Oh and Lynch is working with Herzhog on a new film called My son, My son. You heard it here first.

Back to Mel Brooks. I hate him.

I agree completely with Ben. I cannot tolerate Mel Brooks. The exploitation of "jewishness" is absolutely pish and Roark has made some points I made a little while back about the prick.

The first half of The Producers is a masterpiece of comic timing.
Also High Anxiety, Blazing Saddles and Life Stinks have their moments.

That is quite possibly the best news I've heard in the last 47 minutes...

this thread rips my soul to shreds

i grew up watching mel brooks, so i have a ridiculous bias in his favor

while not much of his stuff is laugh out loud funny, i find most of it is humorous and entertaining

'history of the world' still kills me
