Sweeney Todd

I need to upgrade my mates - it was a shock to mine that this was a musical.
Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter are fantastic.
Sacha Baron Cohen is the show-stealer.
the rest of the cast are fab.
After the initial squirmy "oh Christ, they might sing every fucking line" phase, this settles down into a superbly filmed (the London shots, the sets, the lighting/background swapping), very funny rendition, particularly considering the constraints that the soppy sub-plot places on the overall story. Very 'stage musical' feel about it with all the luxuries of special effects, plenty of gore and Tim Burton magic.
Great stuff. Anyone else seen it?

Um. Smokers have notoriously BAD singing voices.

Yes. Sam Cooke is an awful singer.

technical-bad
not necessarily quality-bad.
Sam Cooke could never do Pagliacci.

And Pagliacci could never do Siberian throat singing, what the fuck is your point?

I don't really think I had one
I just hear Marla Singer talk and feel confident that that voice should not try to find varied pitch.

They all sing just fine. Some better than others. Helena Bonham Burton is pleasantly spot on. Depp does a bit of a Bowie. Fair to say that singing is not the strong point of most of the main characters put they pull it off really well.
It's not necessarily going to convert anyone who doesn't like musicals though.
