I was extremely pleased that I downloaded the Laserdisc versions of the first(last) three films in DVD format.
None of that CGI bollocks
None of that Jabba bollocks in A New Hope.
None of my cash going to Lucas.
Bliss.

I have the gold vhs box set. I loved it then. I was obsessed, but not that I think back. I wish I had the silver box set without all the updates.

One was fullscreen the other was widescreen.
That was the difference between gold and silver.

I thought silver was the original, and gold was the one with the retarded, and ugly updates?

I think they re-released them as the originals just recently if not soon.

i've got that same vhs set buried in my garage somewhere... without the updates. whatever it is you're talking about, it does exist.

I don't think the original VHS box set had a widescreen / fullscreen differentiation.
I think that box set was only available fullscreen
at least, the box set I had as a kid was fullscreen.

Goats: The one with the updates was released on Laserdisc and VHS about 1-2 years before the gold and silver ones mentioned. This edition was a digitally remastered edition, but did not include all that shit Lucxas stuck in the gold/silver (widescreen/full screen) sets. I have the laserdisc to DVD rips with menus for the unmolested version. This edition came in a black box set with red writing. I have the tinned vhs edition too with scripts and about 10 hours of documentary footage. Incidentally...
Karp:...when this set was released (either a year or two years before the special editions with all the new materials was released) Lucas stated that the Remastered version which was in the stores would be the very last time tim public would ever be able to obtain the Star Wars films in that form. he was not stating a claim about the media the films would appear on in future, he was basically stating the Special Editions with the new material woul be the only versions availble to the public after those units had sold their last copy. I don't think he'll go back on his word...but he might.
Reverse: The original VHS release of Star Wars (not digitally remastered) and you could either get wide or full screen. I have it in Wide Screen. There were four major editions release before Lucas put crap into the films. I got the first and last.

There'll be some sort of box set every 18 months or so, but it'll never be quite definitive.

watched 'revenge of the sith' last night for the first time since i watched it theaters when it came out
allow me to be the 239482358th person to say, 'what the hell was george lucas thinking?!?!?'
what happened to the 'used universe' philosophy he prided himself on for the first three films?
why did he use the 'electric set' of crayola markers (hot magma! shocking yellow!) as a color scheme for everything?
has there ever been anybody more miscast and overmatched for a role than hayden christensen?
peter jackson had the right idea with the LOTR movies
the overuse of CGI is tacky as hell and looks silly
the more real elements you can work into a visual, the much much MUCH better off you are
its inexplicable and kind of embarassing that george lucas either forgot that or turned his nose up to it
dipshit
