Go for some game demos on the cover of game magazines mate, see what you like.

I have to recommend any of the Halo games for shooting, Mass Effect for sci-fi RPG, there's some command and conquer games on there, but I didn't get into them when I had my 360.

Orange box is the Half Life package, can't remember what it contains exactly, I never got it.

Live question, toast/Chris, or reverseengineer/Mitch would be able to tell you.

I tried Red Faction guerilla, I preferred the original as an FPS, it's third person perspective now, which ruins it for me.

If you're getting a new console, you get the Gold (full xbox live service) for free for one month, then silver indefinitely. SWilver is free so the content is all there at your fingertips.

Gold allows you to play online and obtain demos etc.

Silver allows you to download demos and to purchase games online. Using the generic (Silver) membership would offer a good base to start downloading and sampling what is out there.

Where to start though depends on your interests.

From Xbox Live Arcade (downloadable games) I'd highly recommend the following:

Super Meat Boy. One of the best old school-esque platformers ever.
Shadow Complex. A twist on Super Metroid. Very well made if a little short.

Otherwise my personal favourites are:

Forza Motorsport 3. Possibly the best racer made.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Go with the first one and work your way on from there, unless you intend to play online then you should choose one of the latter two ad fewer people play Call Of Duty 4 now.
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 and 2 are great games but online/multiplayer is now almost disolved.
Bioshock is great, part two is also good but is somewhat lacking.
Fallout 3 Game Of The Year Edition is well worth checking out. I loved it to death but have no real desire to reply it at this point.
The Elder Scrolls IV: oblivion game Of The Year Edition is excellent. Great fantasy/medieval rpg and the expansion in this pack"Shivering Isles" is excellent.
The Orange Box is great value. Contains Half Life 2 and Episode 1.2 and 2 and also includes the great puzzle game Portal. Also has team fortress which I dislike and maybe has no online support now.
Of the Halo games. Halo: Reach is exceptional.

I'm still in love with Mario vs Donkey Kong from the Gameboy Advance. I'd welcome a re-release of this.

Awesome game, particularly time trial. The achievements were cleared within an hours gaming time though but there';s more to play for.

In my view they're as important as high scores and leaderboards for many games and serve to enhance them in many cases. There are some which are awful or near impossible to achieve but managing those tricky ones can be extremely rewarding.

One of my favourite recent ones is from Halo:Reach 'If you came to hear me beg" which wants you to melee kill an Elite before landing from a fall which would normally kill you. Forums are stacked with people who have tried many times to get it and couldn't. I got it within 90 seconds and was therefore beaming.

The Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2's Co-Operative achievements for the Mulitplayer maps were exceptional and opened up a seemingly unexplored section of the game up to me which I've found to be the richest multiplayer experience of any shooter yet.

I don't see a point in this over zealous points farming though like you see on Xbox 360 Achievements, though I am a member there. I feel playing the game and enjoying the experience is far more important that the accumulation of a Gamerscore although this can be a welcome distraction for a time.

It's a solid game, but probably not the best. But I love how the gimmicky customisable shit works.

well i set it up , and i got a handfull of games too . mass effect 2 , gears of war 2 , hulk , dirt 2 , army of 2 , cod world at war , and others . i just havnt spent any real time with it yet . i tried halo wars for 3 hours , came to the conclusion i am NOT playing ANY strategy games with a controller , ever .

hate to be a fuddy duddy but man !

got about as far as just trying out 5 to 10 minutes a game , prototype , dark void , some of them i had to give up right away ! hulk was fun , for a minute , gears of war looked cool . i will take some of the suggestions in this thread , make a list , work from that . i am in no hurry though .

i did mod it with 2 fans , with their own power supply , and i have the xbox p.s. hanging , i put it on its own circuit , with a switch too . its up on top of a dvd player .

Yeah, strategy is a pig on consoles.

Mass Effect 2 is pretty good but it's not one I'd ever go back to. It's my brother's favourite game.
