Tomahawk vs Fantomas
Tomahawk vs Fantomas
Which of these Mike Patton super groups do you prefer?
Let's analyze shall we?
Fantomas debut-I find myself rarely listening to it anymore. This album was basically the band's signature in style. Some excellent tracks, but didnt quite hold up over time over all.
Director's Cut-Arguably their best album. Many great tracks like Godfather, Rosemary, Henry, Der Golem, Vendetta, Investigation. Solid.
Delirium Cordia-Nice dark backround album. But nothing more. Interesting idea, but certainly not the kind of album most would play anymore than once a year if that...
Suspended Animation-Basically this album is a much better version of the debut. Great album over all. Monster comeback!
T'hawk debut-Excellent album. As many on here have said, I think this album has gottin' better to listen to over time. When it first came out I was slightly disappointed but now I really like nearly every track.
Mit Gas-Some of the band's finest work like Rape, Birdsong and Capt Nightmare. However most of this album has a lot of filler. Tracks that are just ok, but far from greatness.
Anonymous-This album has taken a lot of heat from many T'hawk fans. But personally I love it. Maybe I'm biased because I have a fascination with native american culture, the southwest. But I truly love most of these tracks. Red Fox, Cradle Song, Antelope Ceremony, Song of Victory, Sun Dance, Mescal Right 2, Totem are all great track. Much better than Mit Gas IMO and almost as good as the debut.
My conclusion? While I find the grand scheme of Fantomas much more interesting, I probably find myself listening to Tomahawk a bit more. I think I'm gonna have to say T'hawk by just a hair.

Re: Tomahawk vs Fantomas
I will also say this. I'd be much more interested in seeing what a new Fantomas album would sound like over Tomahawk. Perhaps it's because Tomahawk is a basic rock band while Fantomas is much more intense and experimental.

Tomahawk.
As I've said before, Fantomas would be god-tier if they did normal length songs with more structure, oranized chaos, which is why The Director's Cut is a classic. Kind of like Melt-Banana, their early work was a bunch of 30 second explosions of noise, yet their best work is their longer, more focused tracks. (eg: Shield for Your Eyes)
The 30 second bursts are cool and all, but leave you wanting more.
Anonymous is fucking classic, anyone who doesn't like it can suck my dick. Even if you do like it, you can suck my dick.

i really over listened to the debut when it came out . i can see why they didnt tour with the last album (no bass player) , although i really enjoy anon to . i am hoping for something really special with the next one . i forget what was said about it , something about it being more mellow or ... they should get a bass player and mix it up , the sound they got on the first album translated really well live . it was very angry sounding , but I ate it up . once again , anyone who doesnt have the stockholm bootleg , you are missing out , the cover they do , is it mott the hoople (?) that was magic right there boy .

Re: Tomahawk vs Fantomas
how can you NOT compare 2 different things. it's easy to do any many times the juxtaposition from one to another will start to make sence.
case in point: comparing puppy kisses to fresh zebra meat.
-both can be very sweet
-both can help you get through a hard time
-both can be just what you need at that point in time
-neither can tell you what time it is
-both can possibly get you laid
-neither have much to do with a sandwich eaten by me yesterday

to compare two very similar things is derp.
it is child's play and pointless. why not just belch the alphabet?
better yet, fart in roman numerals.
and not in the bathtub either.

Re: Tomahawk vs Fantomas
I don't like Fantomas: the Director's Cut was OK, that's about it. All the rest was some unlistenable tosh Mike Patton churned out because he was angry about FNM splitting up. Buzz's attempts at playing metal riffs are particularly embarassing: he really is the weakest link here. I think a great guitarist could have saved Fantomas from being a joke. Naked City, Ruins, Boredoms, Zeni Geva all>Fantomas. Maybe Space Streakings are worse.
Tomahawk on the other hand was the sound of him pining for FNM, trying to write rock songs again (some of them on the s/t are pretty damn good: I can get behind that album), but having them ruined (especially on the clearly rushed Mit Gas) by his tendency to start screaming randomly in the middle of songs, and Jon Stanier's sloppy drumming. I mean, as a Helmet fan I really don't know what the fuck Stanier was thinking over the course of the first two Tomahawk records. When you hear the crap he churns out with Battles, you get a glimpse of the hatred of rock music this man must harbor, and his perverse love for trendy indie feel-good avant-garbage. The Indian one I think I listened to it back in 2006, but I don't remember being too impressed.

moonraker was a rough draft retarded fantomas lite wet midget belch that mike threw together
because he was pissed that there is not a more effective cure/fix it plan for shin splints.
peeping tom on the other hand, not real sure what tragedy he was going through at that time.
probably something involving his wife, the harlem globetrotters, and the cost of unnecessary abortions.

Re: Tomahawk vs Fantomas
I am very VERY disappointed he is backing away from Crudo. I mean damn, he was this close to making a record with Fred Durst and now it's not going to happen. Any of it. Give Durst control of the next Peeping Tom, and you have rap-rock gold.
