I think you'd enjoy Colin Tudge's And So Shall We Reap. I agree it makes sense that people be a little more conscientious of the amount of meat they eat and perhaps even ensure that they eat a little more offal (waste not want not). I liked Tudge's book because he doesn't preach that Vegetarianism is the answer and he's absolutely correct. The more vegetarians the better, but there'd be so much waste if we all turned vegetarian. Whilst highlighting the importance of good husbandry, he also advises that an over emphasis (or an mis=understanding/over-reaction) on ethical matters has (in the UK) led to a huge waste in meat resources, most noteably veal calves. In Britain we no long export the animlas to the continent because it is considered inhumane. Quite right. But along with this, veal is no longer sold in Britain either, so the animals are habitually slaughtered and not processed as food. Now that's truly unethical. At least use the beasts.Mary Hinge wrote:Wilson does talk about the staggering quantity of grains that go towards putting food in front of first-worlders, as they are primarily meat-eaters. He makes the comparison with Indians; 10 billion Indians consume around the same volume of grains as 2.5 billion Americans, as so much of the grains get converted into livestock and poultry.
(He cites Americans, I doubt whether Aussies would be far behind that)
But he also talks about population explosion, catastrophic human interference with natural environments, biodiversity, and the general short-sightedness of people as they fuck up everything with (often wilful) ignorance, and puts them all together. He doesn't preach or patronise, he's just a really smart, fascinating guy who talks common sense in a beautiful way.

Just read Fever Pitch. I had this free with an Arsenal membership some years back and could never bother reading it because of the shitty adaption to film. The book is excellent. Cracking little philosophies and ponderings from a writer I dislike.

I could use moderator magic to move the offending post. I think I should start a thread so we can discuss the merits of such a manoeuvre.

You didnt fuck up, toast, cuz that film really did justice to the book. Its one of the most accurate filmatisation of a novel Ive seen.Eviltoastman wrote:Ondska - Very competent film, very enjoyable.
So in a way you have watched a book.
Well, I guess you fucked up, since you forgot an "n" at the end of the title: "Ondskan".
Recent books:
Ive just finished a triology of these swedish crime/mystery novels by Stieg Larsson:
Män som hatar kvinnor (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
Flickan som lekte med elden (The Girl Who Played with Fire)
Luftslottet som sprängdes (The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest)
All great! Probably some of the best crime stuff Ive read. But I havent read the english translations, so I cant really recommend them (im not even sure if #3 is finished).
The first one is made into film. Its pretty decent, but not even remotely close to the book. That said, if you are into rape, violence against women in general, bondage, nazis, murder, incest, and a really good story.... then its well worth a download

Re: Recent Books that aint 'Arry Potter.
My most recent outings:
Dawn of the Dumb: Dispatches from the Idiotic Frontline ~ Charlie Brooker
Collection of his Guardian articles, I absolutely love the man. Ascerbic and generally malcontent in tone Had read most of them online but it's always nice to read someone writing about how much rubbish everything is. A few of the more obscure British 'personalities' escaped me, but given the context (generally, person X on reality show Y), I can instantly pick the Australian franchise's equivalent.
Infinite Jest ~ David Foster Wallace
I won't say much except this is now my all time favourite book. Hilarious and such playful use of English.
Generation Kill ~ Evan Wright
If you liked the show, certainly worth reading the book. Not much difference but worth it none the less.

Well I'm no crotchgrabber, but this evening I drank a bottle of vodka and watched Watership Down. I can now fairly say, twas nothing on the book, but still kinda nice.
