Today I read the first story of Oblivion.
I'd say 'average'.

Is this writer worth persevering with or do I cut my losses and get out RIGHT now?

When I get around to reading Infinite Jest in a couple of years I'll get back to you.

Having read Infinite Jest I can say, skip his novels and go straight to his older short stories.
the collection, "Girl With Curious Hair" is good stuff.
Some of "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men" is great, too.

Infinite Jest is exactly what the title promises.
Joke's on you.

he's next on my reading list after i finish 'the idiot'
(i swear he was always next, not just now after he killed himself)
i was thinking of starting with 'brief interviews with hideous men', then going into his essay collection
before finally tackling 'infinite jest'

wildly different opinions on this guy
people either love him or absolutely loathe him
i can understand how one would love or loathe the overwhelmingly self-conscious and self-indulgent style he wrote with
so, im looking forward to reading, even if there's a 50% chance i may stop after 20 pages

any further onions on this guy?

and speaking of onions, id be remiss if i didnt post this:

even his overwhelmingly self-indulgent stuff is fascinating
so it's hard to stop after 20 pages.

the suicide thing, though... you just blew my mind. Though of the writers I like, he'd be the one most likely to. Except maybe Gaddis, but he's already dead.
