I don't judge it solely on the homage thing at all. I still find it crap. I reference the homage-angle as me trying to find a redeaming feature, which I still can't do. The fight scenes are surprisingly poor in their execution, and the acting is poor because of the obvious step-by-step direction of Tarantino. You can see it in the mannerisms of the characters, and hear it in the delivery of their lines. I, personally, find that to be a sign of poor direction. I can't see how watching the second part can save that.

Anyone worth a fist full of arseholes is contrary enough to know that any time someone tries the ever-tiring motif of 're-appropriation is a legitimate art form' can suck shit as the resulting piece piece isn't anything more than mindless cinema / art / music / poetry / ghey.
Even my much bandied "jejune pasticcio" is a step up from such unashamed pilphering.
As such, as previously stated, I enjoyed watching 'em once or twice, but I still consider them the most defining point of Tarantino's work, but not in a good way.
Po Mo fucking WANKER.
But Judas, I do think the second is a little better. Though as my gods David and Margret put it years ago, it should have been a single release. It's so easily digestible (unless your pallate is incredibly sensitive) I could have easily swallowed both as a single movie running the same length, in one sitting.
We may as well go out and buy modern Aboriginal artworks

I'll say that I like Jackie Brown better than any other Tarantino movie, though.

I don't know if I'd say try hard though.
It's not as if it ever took itself too seriously...

Saw the second one for the first time today. I enjoyed it alot more than Vol. 1. Probably because it had more of Michael Madsen's character and with that Pai Mei dude. He was pretty cool with the constant stroking of his beard.
Highly enjoyed the time from when Elle arrives at Budd's trailer to when she gets her other eye plucked out.
