the music section

Post by General Tso s Chicken »

remember at the video store , they had a music section . they would have a few classical concerts , luciano pavarotti , micheal jackson thriller vhs , pink floyd at pompeii AND the wall . the selection was always pretty thin , i mean it was barely bigger than the "health and fitness section" with "buns-o-steal" , sweatin to the oldies , some thing about cholesteral or a heart attack movie .

usually they had one or two really oddball selections in the music section , like the owners son was really into alice cooper so there would be two of his VHS , or something odd that really stood out . i thought it would be interesting to go back and try and dig up some of the more "less obvious" or for some reason "ones i never saw" . so i intend to start looking at these titles and sharing thoughts here .

a lot of these things are really bad , thats NOT going to stop me . also there are a lot of documentary and biography films being produced as time goes on . they are just kind of under the radar so , as of now they have a home here at bunglefever .

i am hoping some of you connoisseurs will lend a hand , i am in need of suggestions , good or bad .
the finished product is just the garbage left over from doing the work.

Tough call- most of the music bios or docs would be in Sockhops documentary thread. [the ones that we love]

the best dollar I ever spent was on this^ puppy.
yes, 1 dollar from the dollar store. on vhs.
I have no idea if this is on dvd or how easy it is to find,
but it is worth tracking down. some really great interview clips with brian on this thing.
try not to laugh. triple dog dare.

+ I am sure you are familiar with the decline of western civilization vids, right?
what about that cramps show where they are performing at the mental institute?

oh, remember/try to forget this one:

there's clips of him talking throughout the whole thing (all taken from the same interview).
among the music/recording stuffs, he talks about how abusive his father was.

"about a son" kurt cobain doc . features audio interviews taped a year before his death set to footage of the areas in which he spent his life . i didnt really learn anything i didnt already know from this sad story of a father who may have taken the easy way out . however from the tone of the over all interviews my money is even more firmly placed on the POSSIBILITY foul play .

ok petey,

I absolutely love this film.
it tells the story of the few remaining hill country bluesmen on fat possum records.
some of them have passed away since this film.
these guys are not living in the lap of luxury dodging cameras and autograph requests.
no bb king/buddy guy shimmering lights and smiles here.
forget all you know about run down shacks, piss poor health, too many children, too little moneys, cockroaches, etc.
forget what you think you know about down and dirty.

I almost pawned my guitars.

seen the daniel johnson one , can not find the rocky ericson one though :(

this was great http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462441/ , despite the fact i aint a huge who fan , its a lot of high quality perspective from the "two" . it kinda struck me how important each member was , except maybe roger .

this must not have made a big impression on me the first time , cause i had watched it recently , but had NO memory of that fact whatsoever :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1333667/

great footage , interesting story , has a couple of creepy "read between the lines" moments , overall if you have NOT learned much about this guy , it would be a great place to start . missing are ANY interviews with the surviving members , but quotes are givin . narrated by johnny dep , (why?) the voice felt , oddly paced , and intrusive . it is a quality doc , just after reading the book many years ago , this felt a little light . i guess not being much af a fan has a lot to do with it !

this was actually pretty good :

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077147/

if you are NOT a fan i wouldn't recommend it , its actual strengths was the music . i thought it was exceptionally well done for parody . interesting to see eric idle as a convincing performer , the rooftop scene he was a lil more charismatic than paul imo. .

the beatles are kind of a touchy subject . at one point they are so overexposed , but i never get tired of the actual songs , most of em anyway . the whole thing is really fuckin sad too , what happened , and then nilsson losing it , that was a real bummer for me .
Deet is really into em all the sudden so i will be re-watching a lot of the stuff , some for the first time .

the anthology video stuff was great .

if you dig conspiracy shit , look into the 60if page , the real treat is the iamaphoney youtube videos , that is some wicked shit there man . there definately was a dark side to that shit that went on , its really scary shit to me . there is just so much evidence connected with Paul , whether or not you buy into the myth is irrelevant when you see how much shit is hidden in ALL his art . fuckin SUPER creepy .

side note , i want to watch that roky erikson thing really bad ! having trouble finding it online .

Until the Light Takes Us

Taking viewers deep inside the notorious "Inner Circle" that promoted murder, suicide and church burning in the Norwegian black metal subculture of the 1990s, filmmakers Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell offer up a nuanced and fascinating documentary. Rare footage and interviews with musicians -- including Gylve "Fenriz" Nagell, Varg "Count Grishnackh" Vikernes and Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg -- shed light on the controversial movement.
