Currywurst

Post by SHARPPIE »

My new (to me) favorite thing. We tried it last week before the Jimmy Scott show...the first currywurst shop in LA just opened a couple months ago, and after hearing about it from my roommate, we couldn't resist.

http://www.berlincurrywurst.com/

We walked in, and were immediately greeted warmly by the German couple who own the place. Within 5 minutes we were educated as to the whole history of this OUTSTANDING dish. In 1949 a German housewife threw together everything she had in her kitchen and, by the grace of god, developed this masterpiece...sausage, smothered in a ketchup or tomato-based sauce, flavored with curry powder, served with fries, and bread to mop up the sauce. "Use the bread for the sauce...don't make a sandwich...don't be American." She was married to an English army officer...that's where the curry came from. Now it's ubiquitous Berlin street food. They love it so much, they opened a museum devoted to it a couple years ago - http://www.currywurstmuseum.de/

After trying it, I completely understand. I got the paprikawurst with garlic sauce, heat level 2 (which was nose-running, eye-watering HOT). Puppy had the rindswurst with jambalaya sauce, level 1 (still pretty spicy). Both BRILLIANT!

Currywurst place opened a couple blocks from me
But no vegetarian option
Another Cherman sausage place opened up a little further away, but they do have veg sausage: will have to give it a try at some point, maybe this weekend

we are going to try and make a currywurst here at home tonight . i cant get knockwurst , and i am really curious if i could substitute a deli hot dog for that . tonight i am using "red" bratwurst , fresh from the local butcher . going for ingredients now , maybe i will get some indian curry ? never bought it so ...

having never tried it , i am shooting in the dark here . i looked at tons of recipes combined a few , so if it turns out really good i may throw it up here later (the recipe) . anyone else tried making this at home ?

i wanna nail this one .

I've made it a couple times...nothing outstanding like Berlin's was...fine tuning it, bit by bit.

it's not currywurst, but we are trying another sausage place tonight - http://www.wurstkuche.com/ - I've heard their alligator & pork one is good.

you should buy a correct version, so you know what you're shooting for. it shouldn't be too thick or very sweet.

Kuche was AWESOME. had the kielbasa, which was spectacular...took me back to the Polish festivals in PA. and puppy had the rabbit...light, but extremely well done. their curry ketchup was pretty close to a currywurst sauce....damn good with their fries.
