rise and fall of WCW

Post by touchy feely »

yes that's right, a wrestling DVD post

picked this up yesterday
its very good and pretty detailed up until about 1996-97
for whatever reason, they completely skip several things
the bischoff/flair thing isn't brought up
bret hart isn't on the disc at all
they didn't really get into how atrocious the company was in 2000
granted, they completely shred vince russo, and deservedly so, but still

there is some great stuff in there though
david crockett lays into jeff jarrett which had me loling
the stuff goldberg had to say was actually insightful
and vince buying airtime on tbs in 1984 was really interesting

mild recommendation

toast and mobes will bail me out on this thread, i know it

even if you think wrestling is a stupid joke, its still kinda fascinating from a business perspective
a comparison would be like if sega went out of business 3 years after the genesis hit its peak

I'll probably check it out but I'll no doubt get annoyed at whatever revisionist slant they put on things. That said, it is an incredibly interesting story. I've seen something similar on another dvd somewhere (the Monday Night Wars?) and watching that then hearing context in other non-official accounts puts in perspective just how bizarre the whole thing was really. The immense money/ego driving it all. Until WCW lost the plot, the wars really did a lot to drive the quality (or at least the 'must see'-ness and outrageous storylines) of the weekly shows. Remember when Mae Young miscarried an aborted fully grown hand? Brilliant stuff.

Can't find the links atm but I saw two 90min shoot interviews from RFvideo on youtube. One with Nash and one with both the Outsiders - very funny but entirely shocking when it comes to the drinking/drugs.

Anywho, once again proving I want his man-babies, heres a line from a Jericho interview
You’ve managed to stay injury-free for the most part throughout your career, and it’s not as if you have a soft work style. What is your secret as far as durability?

I think it’s a combination of good genetics, soul and a lot of luck. It sounds funny, but I think because I grew up in Canada and it was always cold, and you’d go out on a Friday night walking around the streets with your friends and a bottle of vodka, it toughens you and makes you a harder person. I think it makes you have a tougher soul and more tolerance to pain. I also think I’m a little bit of a genetic freak as well. You saw on Raw that it looked like I almost broke my neck, and I have no residual effects. I had torn ligaments in my knee, which usually puts you out for eight weeks, but I didn’t miss any time at all. One of these days I’ll probably just disappear in a puff of smoke and spontaneously combust like the drummer in “Spinal Tap.”

there really isn't that much of one actually, it's not a burial by any stretch
there's just soooooooo much they left out
the doc portion is 105 minutes, could have easily been 2 and a half hours

I might get this, but I've heard that they chickened out on telling the story properly onr in enough depth.

This wasn't bad.

Also just watched the Rise and Fall of ECW, which was excellent. It clocks in at just under 3 hours and is extremely comprehensive.

Hai guys! Did you all realise that this wrestling stuff is all FAKE? It's true! All of it! Even the lengthy posturing where they seem to be really upset with each other! They're not really. In fact, they're probably all really good buds. And the chairs are made of balsa!

Anyway, yeah... FAKE!

Of note: The Jericho documentary is pure awesomeness on a stick. A must watch.

Also of note: I'm seeing Fozzy tomorrow.

Yayz!

Update: Fozzy are utterly hilarious. Well worth getting hammered and giggling along.

When he retired in 1995 I had the pleasure of watching them in my hometown. Because a friend ran the after show club where Jericho was doing a set I got to meet him which was excellent as he is one of my heroes. He's a very cool fella.
