The problem with anime films is that nothing has yet topped Akira. Which came out in fucking 1988.

Personally, I feelthat quite a lot of studio Ghilbi's stuff has topped Akira. Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle both offer a depth not found in Akira. I also thought Ghost in the Shell was better.

Not a big fan of anime, but I liked Akira, loved Ghost in the Shell, and Urotsukidoji was the tits.

I could watch Excel Saga: google image search makes it look a little bit cutesy
Which brings me to Miyazaki. Big fan of his earlier material, but these days I just don't care for kids anime
Ghost in the Shell had some nice moments, but overall it was nothing special. For me Shirow is a great painter, but his stories don't mean shit.

Paprika was alright, if a little laborious. I am open to more recommendations.

I'd like to chuck Perfect Blue and Paprika into the ring as brilliant mindfucks from our Japanese cohorts from recent years. Haven't done any series since I was 12 so I can't comment on this 'OAV' thing that sweeps through the internet populations from #DALnet to Bunglefever. Rather pervasive but.

I like the movie with the spider and the sero-positive android with the flamethrower. Especially when it bursts into the gargantuan planet with the thingy. Oh, Manga, you gotta love it.

I've just gotten back into this. Amazing how many are complete on youtube. A lot of them aren't appealing as I remember (guyver for one) but I rewatched Macross Plus and thoroughly enjoyed that. I'm making my way through the Devilman trilogy at the moment and its cool so far. Also downloaded Patlabor, which always got a run by (fittingly) Des Mangan on SBS.

As for series, I'm also gonna give Cyber City Oedo 808 another bash but I'm at a loss remembering the other ones I liked. On the movie front - Appleseed, Castle of Cagliostro (and the other two in that series that never got local release) and a few more who's names currently escape me.

If anyones got any suggestions for the movies and short series Animes that had a great run of release under Manga and the other major distrobution company at the time (not as good..the ones that did Ranma and shit) I'm keen to hear 'em.

Reminded me that When I was 10 I had a wicked and massive video store, and was always allowed to rent MA and R rated titles.

awesome email i got from a friend about tenchi muyo:

"It's taken me 10 years to realise ALL of Tenchi is totally STUPID. Kagato has a GIANT PIPE ORGAN FOR NO REASON? BACH IN SPACE???? Ryoko destroys his school because she's bored, then comes on to him. Tenchi just stops going to school, no explanation. HOUSE vanishes, friends don't look for him? His great half-aunt is stasis mode 4 years older than him and wants to jump his bones. He lives with TONS OF CHICKS THAT WANT TO FUCK HIM AND ARE ONLY ANNOYED THAT THE OTHERS ARE THERE, AND HE'S NEITHER NEITHER GETTING ANY NOR WANKING ALL DAY?? In real life that mean's someone's gay. Totally gay."

In addition to the upgrade, the usergroups will lose threads which have little activity for a while.
