Friends bands

Post by Mr John »

Thread for recommending indie, unknown, local bands that you'd never hear of without this god damned thread.

My good mate Phil with his melancholic folky band "The Haiku", who just keep getting better. Last EP is on iTunes for all you Apple iWhores out there who get freaked out by alternative music sources:

Image

Inevitable use of MySpace now
Reggae band The Spectres, my Oz mate Soren plays drums and they have one of the best bass players I have ever jammed with (Alan), plus the added charm that singer Phil/Graham (depends how you know him) is a full time professionally trained clown during the day. They just released an album which is fucking epic:

http://www.myspace.com/thaspectres

Townhouse, who supported them recently and have a very unique sound, with unusual instruments and just damn good songs. I couldn't say what "category" of music I would put them in, so I won't:

http://www.myspace.com/townhousesound

Friend Erik who is a DJ and likes his industrial stuff on the evil side of things. I want to get back into my own scripts and go full time making short films once the next Teamfishcake movie is done and use them for the soundtrack:

http://www.myspace.com/metaltech

Soren's metal band, Lycanthrope, with my funny as fuck mate Cameron singing. We all met working in the Edinburgh Dungeon. I borrow their bass player Chris when I do my Meow thing. They have a rough as fuck video of them rehearsing in my drummer's studio:

http://www.myspace.com/lycanthroperock

I go and support my friends bands whenever I can, it usually means a handful of cash in some dingy venue, a load of drinks and discovering new bands (like Townhouse) on what is a very small scene in the capital here. Please note, none of the above bands are whiny teenage indie rock pricks who sing about their feelings.

Hope you enjoy and can make some similar recommendations.

PLEASE go and see this guy play if you can - he looks a bit like a skinny Elvis Costello, sounds a bit like Brian Molko and is an awesome guitarist. I used to watch him do his folky ballad stuff at the Tron on open mic night (now http://www.outofthebedroom.co.uk/ootb/) with the likes of Polly Phillips, Neil Dixon, Holly Tomas, Jason Pillay, Amy Duncan. Over the last few years he's got a bit more rawk and got this band together, and they sound pretty good.

Swelling Meg, one of the best Embru bands ever, also used to play there.

And Graeme works at Herbies in Stockbridge, so if you get on he might give you a slice of cheese

I tracked down Neil Dixon :)

He moved to - and stayed in - France :(

Always sounded a lot like Jeff Buckley. Another lovely chap.

Black Eye Riot: http://www.myspace.com/blackeyeriot
Dorian on vocals (Acrimony, Helvis, Black Eye Riot), friend and ex-colleague. Stu guitars (Iron Monkey, Dukes of Nothing) who I know through Dorian.

Iron Monkey: http://www.myspace.com/survivaloftheshittest
I just know Stu, through Dorian.

Acrimony: http://www.myspace.com/leavesofmellowgrace
Dorian on vocals, Stu on guitar...a pattern is emerging.

Taint. http://www.myspace.com/taintuk
Local Swansea band. Don't really know them but have had a few pints with them.

Orange Goblin: http://www.myspace.com/theorangegoblin
Band from down south. Know them because of Stu's entanglement with Dukes of Nothing down in London.

Dukes of Nothing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B1tJGAbDwo
London based band. Stu on guitars, one of my favourite metal bands.
