Olive Oil Good for Health but Not for Cooking


Researchers found that participants in a study who consumed the most olive oil tended to have healthier diets than those who consumed the least amount of olive oil.
Participants who had the highest consumption of olive oil consumed less cereal and baked goods but more eggs and vegetables, and had a higher vitamin intake than those who consumed the least amount of olive oil.

Researchers concluded that olive oil is a major contributing factor to the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

This study reinforces the value of olive oil in promoting health as part of the Mediterranean diet. While olive oil can and should be a healthy part of your diet, what most people do not appreciate is that olive oil should not be used to cook with.

Olive oil is primarily a monounsaturated fat. This means that it has one double bond in its fatty acid structure. Although a monounsaturated fat is inherently more stable than a polyunsaturated fat, it is still quite susceptible to heat-induced damage that can result in trans fat.

My mother is from Andalusia and every year we get a few litres of the purest olive oil from some friends she has there... fuck, that stuff is something else!

Every year when i get my share i do lots of different oil marinades... for us peeps who don't have much time to cook as we wish, it's a great trick: if you have 7 different oil marinades, even if you have the same salad every day, it will taste different with each dressing...

i never really used much olive oil..

but after watching cooking shows.. i realized that olive oil is used with almost everything..

ive been buying some rather pricey olive oils lately.. and there is such a huge difference...

can anyone tell me what "trans fat" is?

i dont remember ever seeing a thing like coconot oil..
it does sound absolutly gorgeous tho.

is it like in a 'dangerous' fat, even if you arent overweight?
cos if it is then i will definatly think twice about using olive oil that way again.

It's not that dangerous.
Generally trans fatty acids are responsible for the stale smell of old butter, etc.
You'll have to ask my brother though, he's the one with the degree in biochemistry.

i guess its ok then cos i cook with olive oil only about 3 to 5 times a month.
