There was a misunderstanding in the zinfandel stakes, and we ended up dealing with a very palatable Alkoomi Shiraz. I haven't tasted a bad wine from Alkoomi.

ZigZag Zinfandel (made by the same guys who make my favorite rolling papers) makes a very mediocre wine.

The Stump Jump - Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre is some good shit

I went on a wine tour in the Hunter Valley on the weekend.

The highlight was the Ivanhoe Cellar Door.

I was absolutely maggotted, and tripping a little from the Zyban. No seizures though.

I had a glass of a cab sav from an Italian restaurant on Sunday (which I can't remember the name of) which was the best cab sav I've had the pleasure of drinking in a long time.

I usually find them to be boring but I've had a few that are quite good. I think cab savs are meant to be drunk with a meal.

I was locked into a phase of them for years because my ex got migraines from shiraz, and our shelves are stacked mainly with Australian shirazes and cab savs. As a result, we have many good ones, but I think I just tired of them.

I'm trying to avoid Merlots where I can, because they seem a little bit too easy to drink, as a rule.

I haven't met a Claret that didn't belong in a sleazy caberet bar. Same with Chablis. Both have been excommunicated from my palette as the kinds of wine you need to spend a decent amount on in order to get a decent one.

Merlot and Pinot Noir, however, can be as cheap as chips and they still taste good.

Rah.

I had a golden-green sparkling pinot yesterday (Canoundra?) which killed me in the face, reconstructed my features, and killed me again. If there was a priest present, I would now be married to it. More details to come.

Giving the glass a bit of a swirl to get oxygen into the mix is good though.
smell the cork when you order a white. easiest way to tell if the bottle is 'corked'... it will have a bit of a skunked beer odor, and possibly some green tinge on the cork.

I love wine I do.
With white, I say you can't go wrong with a Marlborough Sauv Blanc, a Hunter Valley Semillon (especially Poole's Rock, Saddler's Creek, even Allendale or Tempus Two).
I like my whites crisp, light and ultra-dry. I like my reds heavy, full and sweet-ish.
and reds - Barrossa Cab Sauv - Vinecrest - awesomeness
The only blend I drink is Brokenwood, Cricket Pitch.
Dessert wines - love a good Muscat or Botrytis Semillion - just spent a bomb on a French Sauternes and some Aussie Gewurtztraminer. I'll let you know how I go if you like
Hunter Valley ports - go to Kevin Sobel's just off the Broke Road. mmmmmmmm
