The Wine thread

Post by Hoor-paar-Kraat »

So, last night I met up with an old friend to drink a bottle of Opus One, that was given to me as a birthday present.

This shit was so fucking good but I'd never buy a bottle of it on my own. It's just too expensive.

I figured I'd see what wines, if any, you've been drinking, as of late.

My latest two addictions are Shannon Ridge Sauvignion Blanc and Concannon Petite Syrah.

Both are highly reccomended and very affordable at about $11 a bottle.

Whatcha got?

Got a shiraz in the cupboard, which is reportedly very good.

We just finished the case of very affordable and tasty Cab Merlot that we bought for our wedding. Twas good.

Have been appreciating whites a lot more lately, particularly Semillon Sauvignons.

Our neighbours keep trying to palm off a bubbly red onto us. They love it. I detest it.

A bubbly red?
HOW REVOLTING!

I've been drinking alot more whites lately. Try Benziger's Fume Blanc. Great shit and it's $10 a crack.

Do any of you know where I can buy Methuzela or Imperial sized bottles? I need them for a show I'm curating and I can't find anyone who sells them.

I doubt we'd get that here.

Looks like there are a couple Fumes made by good estates here (e.g. Alkoomi and Brown Brothers) that I'll check out, that seem to be similarly priced.

Hoor, I am not sure if your Publix's carry it, but mine started to.

San Sebastian Red Vintner.

The best cheaper wine I have had in my life,
I used to buy it in St. Augustine.

(San Sebastian winery)

The Yellow Tailstuff isn't bad. It's really cheap and really sweet. Even the Chardonnay was really sweet. So, it'll give you a cavity and get you drunk.

Shaina, I haven't really bought wine at the grocery store in a while. I have had a few problems with wines from the grocery store having dried out corks because they don't store them on their sides. It's not common but it happens. I'll look for that stuff when I go shopping later today.

Matt, Gabbiano Chianti is really nice. Talk about a good supermarket wine. Being Italian, I tend to stay away from Chianti's because I was always given terrible jugs full by my Mom who knows nothing about wine.

Jake, Ravenswood is a fantastic little winery. They make some beautiful wines. In fact, their shiraz is amongst one of my favorites and it's readily available.

Lately I've enjoyed the fuck out of Red Diamond Shiraz ($12 a bottle) and Toad's Hollow Cabernet ($22 a bottle).

Do any of you like port?

Yes. San Sebastian makes a port as well, but that you have to buy at the winery.

I don't ever buy it from Publix much, because we get the cheaper cases for the pub direct from St. Augustine, but I have had no problems thus far. They were keeping it in a shadow rack, so it was on it's side.

Any Port recommendations?

Cockburns is damn good.

Port is very tempermental. I've got like 8 bottles of vintage port that have been given to e as gifts over the years. People don't seem to understand that alot of ports, especially vintage ports, have to be laid down for 5 to 10 years before they're drinkable. You can buy a tawney port and drink it right away.

I'll throw some more reccomendations at you when I have a bit of time.

Oyster Bay 2003 Pinot Noir. It has an incredibly intoxicating "nose" (I expect it's a bit over the top for true connoisseurs), but it's a fantastic drop. (New Zealand)

Iniskillin 2001 Icewine Riesling. I don't normally go for Riesling at all, but this baby has occult properties. Plus, it's an icewine. (Canada?)

You really should decant every wine you drink. It's not to be a pretentious wanker. It just allows the wine to open up. If you want the most out of your wine I'd do that.

You can get a decent wine decanter for under $30.

Take it easy, man. The blokes are reading this.

I've only recently discovered that smelling the cork is a deadset giveaway for not really knowing what you're doing.

Not that I've ever done that

Smelling the cork and swishing the wine around in your mouth is good for one thing and one thing only. If you happen to order an expensive wine at a restaurant you should always do this. If you happen not to like the wine then it'll be easier to send it back because people will think you know what you're talking about.

I just returned from the liquor store with a bottle of Concannon Sauvignon Blanc and I'm really excited because their Petite Syrah is one of the best wines I've had. I can only imagine what they can do with a Sauvignon Blanc. I also picked up a bottle of Red Diamond Shiraz because I know that shit is great. If you're lookinf for a chardonnay DO NOT pick up Red Diamond's Chardonnay as it is sub par at very best.

So you're saying that smelling the cork is acceptable behaviour? I was told yesterday that it's not.

Giving the glass a bit of a swirl to get oxygen into the mix is good though.
