this belongs in private messages to joel, however...

i like coltrane's 0/\/\ .

it usually collects 1 of the 2 labels:
- overrated
- garbage

hell, I love garbage (no, not the band, they are waaaaaay overrated).

60's out-there jazz

well for starters there's Ornette Coleman. He really started it all in 1960 with Free Jazz and went from there.

Impulse! records has a great catalogue of that sort. John Coltrane (please fcuknig spell it rite next time dude) has plenty of 60s out-there stuff. however you have to start with 1965 Coltrane releases on impulse. everything he did before 64 i would not call out there..well sorta he did that one album on atlantic with Don Cherry but coltrane goes off the deep end from 65-67.

Also check out all of Alice Coltrane's stuff on impulse! There's only a few. Ptah, the el daoud is my fave. Some havent made it to digital yet so you gotta do some crate diggin.

Eric Dolphy & Pharoah Sanders were Coltrane 2 acolytes. Eric Dolphy is one of my favorite and underated figures in all of jazz. i implore you check out his stuff esp his stuff from the 60s.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk....but he didn't get more out-there till the 70s

Archie Shepp
pianist & composer Cecil Taylor
mingus - black saint & the sinner lady . Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus is a good one .
andrew hill
Sun Ra space is the place
so many to list.

turn ME on to some new, exciting avant-jazz. some ppl dont like it. they have no sence of adventure these fucking people. they want to stay in their squalid comfort zone and pick their nose and eat their fucking boogers.

out there is sick. george duvier on bass....ron carter on cello...roy haynes & dolphy. amazing instrumentation with bass & cello in a fuckin quartet. brilliant

can i get a thelonius sphere monk from a muthafucka? dude epitomized out-there jazz not only on stage but in his real life. monk was one of the only players out there that quit playing well before he died because of mental illness. i heard he did one whole tour where he literally didn't speak more than a few words.

here it is.. http://www.discogs.com/Dave-Douglas-Fre ... ter/292752

The Allmusic review by Dave Lynch awarded the album 4 stars stating "As both player and sole composer, Douglas stands as the unifying force, free to approach the full possibilities of each tune individually, but not at the expense of the overall album's coherence. Quite literally crackling with energy and dense with ideas from the first to the hidden 12th track, Freak In is one of the strongest CDs of his extraordinary career"
