Art books - coffee table thread

Post by Mr John »

I was given two books aboot Banksy recently, full of pics of his work. They're good fun.

Anyone else have arty books they keep on their coffee table in a slightly pretentious fashion? I feel the need to get a chez lounge and lie on it looking androgynous and wearing velvet now.

I want that Ryden book!!

I have several Taschen coffee table books:

This is the most recent I bought. Lots of great LA photos. Havent gotten through the book yet, though. Ive talked to the people at Taschen, and they told me that a similar New York book is one its way :D

Everyone should own this one:

Nothing special about this one. Got it cheap.

One of my favs:
Image

Been a fan of Tom of Finland for ages. I Almost died when I found this fucking expensive, but awesome book. I had to have it. This one, along with Terryworld, is the greatest conversation starter ever! You should check it out, Mr J.
Image

This is the biggest book I own. Its a rerelease of the famous Sumo, by Helmut Newton. It costs a fortune, but comes with a nice (and useful) bookholder.
Image

Thats all my Taschens I think.

I also have:

Shepard Fairey's "Supply and Demand". A must have if youre into street art.
Image

"Banksy". Probably the same as Mr John mentioned above:

Image

"Street Art of Noway. Very similar to the Banksy book. Basically just stencils, wich is a bit unfair to the title of the book. It contains alot of DOLK pictures. I wish DOLK got his own book. He is almost better than Banksy IMO

Image

"Street Art of San Francisco". Unlike the "Norway" book, this contains a great vareity of street art

Image

And of course I got the Seinfeld coffee table book (which in fact doesnt transform into a coffee table  )
Image

The book I want the most right now, is "The Circus" from Taschen. It contains LOTS of freaks!!!

Image

$300 is slighly above my budget at the moment, though. That said, Ive seen Taschen books costing more than $20 000

Its trashy, pretty, ugly and glamorous, all at the same time. As expected.
I really love his photos. I mean, what is there not to love? White trash prostitutes and celebs in wicked colorful sets = Awesome!

It also contains the "drunk americans" series (you know, the one with Rick Cave), which is worth the money on its own.

I forgot to mention these two books, yesterday:

Gonzo. Bunch of pictures taken by the good doctor himself:

"Andy Warhold Giant size", a huge collection of Wathol art:

I love Mark Ryden but this is not a good book, and I can't quite put my finger on why: maybe because when I bought it I felt like I'd seen all of it before many times. I feel a bit cheated by the extent to which he recycles the same pictures, but I will try to get his new one, where he actually seems to be trying on some new ideas:

Bought that Ryden book above, yesterday.
Slightly disappointing. It doesnt contain that many pictures, and several of them are posted twice.
