Talk to me about old Woody Allen

Post by ReverseEngineer »

I rented Manhattan, because people say good things about Woody Allen and I didn't have a proper frame of reference.
Holy damn, was this movie shot and directed well.

Recommend! Please!

Hannah and her Sisters. That's my favourite. Manhattan is one of his best though.

Annie Hall
Interiors
New York stories
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Husbands and Wives

See these first, along with Hanna and her Sisters. And then see some of his newest. Match point, scoop, Melinda & Melinda. All great films. Sweet lowdown, Curse of the Jade scorpion or Small time crooks.

I can see that RedundantUser already recommended match point. Ignore my posts or tell the mods to edit them away.

Since Allen is rated very highly there's always a danger of someone overrating him. I still don't find him to be obiously overrated. Tarantino or Coppola would be much clearer candidates for that in my opinion. Woody Allen is a great film maker.

Let's make this into a Bergman Vs. Fellini thread instead.

I can't stand Woody Allen.

"Oh, I'm just so upset about all this, and why would she do this to me... I just don't understand. I think I'm having an aneurysm. My god, it's horrible... I have no penis or testicles..."

Your opinions about both Woody Allen and my homeland are wrong.

If I ever want to watch a movie directed by, and starring, a simpering neurotic child molester, I'll look him up again.

or just rent Chinatown, which -- by your logic -- is also a bad movie.

I never much cared for Allen. I found Annie Hall quite boring. But Love and Death is hysterical, as is Bullets Over Broadway.

Bingo. He's crafted a persona of himself that overshadows his actual work. Christopher Walken did something similar, which is why people tend to forget how GREAT he was in Catch Me if You Can.

Christopher Walken is a great actor. His performance in The Comfort of Strangers is legendary.
