Asian movies

Post by Rick Cave »

I've been on a bit of a kick lately.

Started with Oldboy.
Tonight I watched Survive Style 5+ and Battle Royale.

I'd like to thank my friend for burning them for me.
I've got a few more on the burner. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and The Last Life in the Universe. Lady Vengeance had one hell of a copyright on it.
Couldn't do it.

It helps to be sober when watching these.
Subtitles hurt when you can't see straight.

Indeed.

Oldboy was good, but I guessed the twist early on. But as Mobes will tell you, seeing him deal with the knowledge is pretty entertaining.

Are you using DVD43 to crack those fuckers?

Fo' Deffs, Oldboy was a great piece of cinema.

I was a little happier, or rather, more enthralled than judy so it took me a little longer to pick up on what was going on. I was happy in my own un-analytic world with that one, and it made it entirely enjoyable.

As for yer crackin' problems, I'll search around to see which of the many dvd crack programs on this box is the one that actually works for me.

My drive (read only) has been waaay past its region changes for years, That said, with whatever is running that makes it work (its an autoexec dll or somit), ALMOST everything plays, with the exception of some US dvd's funnily enough, but it'll let me rip anything.

EDIT: Ok, the program is 'cheetahburner', and is entirely useless as a GUI for ripping and burning, but it installs an autorun called 'NMSAccess.exe' which makes most things read and rip from my drive without a problem.

I use it in conjunction with DVD Decrypter to rip, and then AutoGK to convert to AVI.

It's the single lowest fuss, highest quality method I've found so far. Of course, if you're just ripping to dvd, then go with whatever authoring software works for you.

The guy who burnt them for me used the same program I use.
DVD Shrink. It works most of the time. I think this is only the 3rd DVD I've ever had a problem with.
I really need a new burner though.
I've only got a 4X.

I've been on an Asian movie kick lately as well. Watched Visitor Q over the weekend. I know it's not Miike's most audacious or fucked up movie, but it's still pretty fucked up. Loved Oldboy, am anxiously awaiting Sympathy for Mister Vengeance and Lady Vengeance. According to my Netflix queue Kyua (Cure) is shipping today.

I've read that some of the newer discs coming out these days might need to be ripped with DVD Decrypter. Do you burn straight from DVD Shrink or do you create an ISO and burn the disc later? Just doing that's done wonders for me.

I burn using DVD Shrink.
The burning isn't the problem.
Copying to the hard drive is.

If I have to buy Lady Vengeance that's no big deal.
The guy deserves some money.

I create the DVD folder structure on the hard drive using DVD Shrink. If I have any CSS cracking issues (rarely), I run DVD43 prior.

If you can find One Night in Mongkok, it's worth seeing for some nastiness.

Yes we have... Well, its easy to find Norwegian subs on the classics (Kurosawa etc), new stuff like Takashi Miike films, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance etc, and those Ringu and Ju-on horror hype shit...

I love Asian films, and especially old ones. Its a bit difficult to find some of them with Norwegian subtitles, but most DVD shops here sell imported DVDs with English subtitles, and that works just fine.

Funny thing, because the Norwegian film and music audiece is said to be among the best in the world when it comes to "good taste". (So they say).
Commercial music and films sell less here than anywhere else in the world. For instance Mars Volta's latest album ended up as a bestseller, and even made # 1 on our list. The band themselves were shocked and thrilled about this... Other bands and artists like Tom Waits, Tool, Mayhem and Deftones have experienced the same. Iam not a big fan of any of those, but at least its better than Scooter, Britney and Limp Bizkit.
The best selling DVD right now is Pirates 2 (that goes without saying), but nr 2 is.... Naked Lunch!?!

The reason is however very simple. Back in the days, two film and music geeks started this little music store selling nothing but "quality stuff". They grew to be the biggest chain here, but continued selling nothing but the good stuff. And with low prices... Actually the best films and albums are the cheapest ones. This attracts people, and just like that, these two guys have become the voice of the Norwegian audiece. Iam not saying we are smarter or anything, because we arent... We just follow the wave... but a good wave! Its just like everywhere else, only opposite if you understand.
But I, just like you, dont like to go with the flow, and tend to step away from the mainstream and the popular stuff. Thats why my favourite movie is Dantes Peak.

Saw Ichi The Killer last night. Apart from a few ideas...it was shit. Not even that violent. And that crying dude was just ridiculous.

I've watched all three from the vengeance trilogy, and loved them all.

Just finished watching Battle Royale which was pretty decent. Thought I was all clever by guessing the ending, but got it wrong.
Nearl: Where's Babar?
X-tacle: He's in the shower.
Nearl: No he's not! Elephants take showers with their noses!
