Documenting the week the greatest american hero of our lifetime came forward. Incredible...terrifying...excellently done. For anyone who sees it, I suggest reading Glenn Greenwald's book "No Place to Hide" for the more in-depth version.

What We Do In The Shadows
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAZEWtyhpes
Another important film from the great documentarians Jemaine Clement & Taika Waititi...thought it really was 'hilarious'...fer serious.
Reality (Réalité)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6KLYj8DMfU
You know that movie cliche where someone wakes up and 'it was all a dream'? This is kinda that to the five-millionth degree...kinda. IMO it's Quentin Dupieux's best film so far. Can't find a decent trailer for it though.
Over Your Dead Body (Kuime)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljT3sxER6fA
As a movie I thought it was above average. As a Takashi Miike movie it's more like average. Kinda slow, but creepy as all fuck.

this deserves it's own post, and a little more than 'brief'
Fish and Cat (Mahi va gorbeh)
Fucking INCREDIBLE! I was totally floored. It's a little over 2 hours long, done in one continuous shot with no edits. More than just a gimmick, the story is good on its own. It's an incredibly tense "horror" movie (for lack of a better word), and it has "flashbacks" (for lack of a better word). The planning/choreography/detail that went into it is just mindblowing. On top of all that, it's very pretty just to look at...and the music...I cannot get over how cool this was.
The bad part: it's a very rare film, and there are no plans for a release; theater, dvd, or otherwise at this point...shame. If you EVER have the chance to see it, do so.

This is the only trailer I can find...the wobbliness/zoom/weird shit going on with the picture is not the way it is.

FISH & CAT boldly defines its own subgenre as a horror comedy art film, in the vein of a FRIDAY THE 13TH installment by way of Alain Resnais. Told in one staged continuous shot, the film moves between a group of university students at a kite-flying festival on a forested lake, and the sinister crooks running a nearby pitstop. It’s not so long before the baddies, carrying knives and an unsavory-looking bag apparently filled with something bloody, make their way into the forest.
A long-take virtuoso, filmmaker Shahram Mokri introduces a Möbius-strip time element, achieved by having characters enter and exit the frame as the camera continues its impassive glide, following some characters while abandoning others to their grisly fates. We branch off to follow different characters for a while, then we catch up with old ones. Then, we start to see scenes which are oddly familiar - we end up in cycles, in loops of time that all seem to flow so naturally from one to the other. Meanwhile, the use of backstory through voiceover adds yet another story layer, making FISH & CAT a rare cinematic experience.

I finally saw 20,000 Days. I liked it a lot.SHARPPIE wrote: 20,000 Days on Earth
Incredible, entrancing, inspirational...all the blurbs they use in advertizing for shitty movies apply here. BUT, it's really for FANS ONLY. If you don't know anything about Nick I'm sure it's a whole shitload of 'what the fuck are they talking about?' & 'who the fuck cares?'. Blixa seems a little bitter...and fat. Kylie got old, but she's still smokin hawt.
Anchorman 2
Liked it. Maybe not as much as the first, but I liked it. It's a bit too long, but I liked it. Did I mention I liked it?
Could've used more Blixa. I don't think he was bitter. He's just German.
I would have liked a scene with Mick Harvey in the car.
Anchorman 2 was the biggest hunk of shit I've seen in years. I didn't even smirk once let alone laugh.
I watched the extended version. Just imagine that if you thought the original was too long.
I hope someone actually forces that kid to drink horse piss. The little shit looked like he was reading cue cards!

What a delicious brain fuck! Very intricate, beautiful and magical. I'll maybe need to watch it again sans spliff to remember what the hell it was about and what the whole mouse thing was about. I love the tickly kid-at-Christmas feeling I get from watching movies like this, thank heavens people still make them.SHARPPIE wrote:

Gondry's best movie, hands down. Filled (as usual) with tons of special effects that had me (as usual) going, "How the fuck did they do that?". You really can't get cuter than Audrey Tautou.
This was terribly engrossing. Nice to see 'normal' Nick, someone I felt I could relate to, enjoying a simple cuppa with Woz, whose cooking obviously sucks - going to mega-Nick (and how). When will Kylie cease to be hot?? What a gal.SHARPPIE wrote:

Okay...I caught a little bit of the 'extended' version on cable. One of my favorite scenes in the whole thing (the RV crash), was chopped to fucking hell, and 90% less funny. I think you just saw a shittier version...at least that's what I'm going to tell everyone.Rick Cave wrote:Anchorman 2 was the biggest hunk of shit I've seen in years. I've never read any of Boris Vian's (the guy who wrote the book) stuff, but Puppy got me a couple of his books recently. Just based on reading 6/8 of one (Red Grass. Translated into English, so I'm sure I'm missing bits of the whole picture, but it's pretty good all the same.), I would say Gondry captured Vian's 'vision of the world' really well.Mary Hinge wrote: What a delicious brain fuck! Fish Story.
Not super recent, 09 release but fuckit.
My new favourite film.
Comet about to hit earth, Japan is evacuated, one indie record store remains open where the owner believes an obscure 70s punk record will save the world. Unconnected flashbacks show him to be correct.
Comedy/Drama/Action/Sci-Fi/Character piece.
I cannot get sick of it.
Also Linda Linda Linda is a kickass film.
Bye.

Fish Story looks awesome...must see.
I'm falling behind here....
Birdman
Loved it...Fish & Cat is way better (for a single shot-ish film), but very well done. Excellent score. Very David Mamet-ish dialogue.
Rosewater
Liked it, but it kinda goes over & over the same shit too much...and a bit of a hero-worship/apology piece. Okay though.
Big Eyes
Really, really liked it...best Tim Burton film since Mars Attacks. Awesome seeing North Beach in 'retro' mode. I cannot get tired of Christoph Waltz.

MUY IMPORTANTE!
to those in the LA area: there will be a screening of Fish & Cat at the Hammer Museum on April 26th, including a Q&A with Shahram Mokri (director).

The Wrecking Crew
Fucking excellent. Made 20 years ago, but it took them this long to get the rights to the music. I thought it was just the Monkees, but apparently no one played their own tunes. I feel so lied to. Carol is absolutely outstanding..."Would you like me to use my Beach Boys pick?"
Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter
Man, what a depressing film...loved it. I just feel so bad/sad for pretty much every single character in the film, but OH MY GAWD....Bunzo!
Chappie
Not a great film, but fun as fuck...total popcorn flick. Loved seeing Jack Man as a bad dude, and the mullet is fabuloso. Yolandi is damn cute. The unnecessary subtitles were kinda weird though.
White God (Fehér isten)
Benji on fucking steroids! Soooooooooooo good/incredible/beautiful/stunning. Cried more during this than I have in a looooong time.
Can't Stand Losing You
The Police from Andy's perspective. Sting's a dick, but we all knew that already. Learned a lot. Liked it a lot.

Re: Recent films. A very brief opinion.
lots of documentaries lately....
Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnRSzZ7WHKU
The best thing about it was seeing his stuff up on the bigscreen. Could have been a little more informative, but I liked it.
Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock and Roll
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ipq4FefX5Ps
I've been a fan of a lot of this stuff for a while, but all I really knew was 'they were all slaughtered under the Khmer Rouge.' As expected it gets super sad towards the end. Loved it...learned a lot.
Who is Gil Scott-Heron?
http://gilscottheron.net/
Done by the 2 people who did 20,000 Days. Super intimate...basically all the facts you can look up on his wiki page are not in the movie. Mostly interviews with his friends/family expressing what he meant to them. Really well done. Coulda been longer though...Felt like 45 minutes.
Peace Officer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY-atTsQnAE
Americans should see this film. Somewhere along the line cops have become COPS, and that's some scary fucking shit.
Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-igpjqRDgDI
As a child of the 80's any time I saw the Cannon logo come up before a movie I knew that what was coming next was gonna be awesome: shit blowing up, bad dialogue, probably boobs...everything you could want. Even a little subtle/not so subtle racism thrown in for good measure (ie almost any Chuck Norris movie). Great fucking film.
...and a notumentary
Goodnight Mommy (Ich seh, Ich seh)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kXpUaQpXMA
Really well shot. A classic film of misdirection. That's probably all I should say. Dug it good, man...

B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West Berlin 1979-1989
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj3qj6KNcLU
Fucking interesting....done almost entirely with archive footage of Mark Reeder (among others). West Berlin in the 80's seems like nirvana.
Victoria
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kp8wcV3GjW0
Another single shot film. Pretty damn good, but I've seen Fish & Cat. Nothing can quite live up to it at this point. Staring at Laia Costa for 2 hours is worth the price of admission though.
He Never Died
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC7HKJZp40E
Rollins in his first starring role, and he completely crushed it. Not your average Hank movie...it was actually good. There's already talk of a sequel/tv show....which I am 100% down for.
Sicario
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XLQ1bkSLDo
Okay...Benicio was cool as fuck (as usual), but I just can't buy Emily Blunt as an FBI agent...kinda distracting. There's talk of a sequel for this as well...meh.

Re: Recent films. A very brief opinion.
Sharppie and i've been hitting the film festival. Hitchcock/Truffaut is the best one we've seen so far.
the most interesting movie about a book about movies.
Queen of the Desert by Werner Herzog was very pretty. that's the most i can say.
James Franco just can't be taken seriously.
The Forbidden Room i had very high hopes for after seeing a What the fuck trailer for it. very disappointing.
i drifted in and out of sleep at least a dozen times.
Chevalier was another disappointment. from the beginning my body was literally aching from tedium.
not that it didn't have its moments, but somehow turned out bland.
looking forward to Anomalisa tomorrow. it really shouldn't go wrong.

I liked Forbidden Room a little more than puppy....it's interesting when you get the story of what it is....could be much better, but it is interesting. There's a few types of people who will love it; film-tech junkies, Udo Kier completists, and people totally blazed out on acid.
Anomalisa was absolutely incredible.....looooooooooooved it. Another homerun for Kaufman. Best puppet sex scene since Team America. See this fucker...

Nick Cave "One More Time With Feeling"
i don't know why our theater couldn't show this in 3D.
i've never seen that many people leave the theater after a movie in dead silence. it was like a funeral.
gorgeously shot, but super depressing.
