I do have a question for you. This came up during our weekly list
brainstorming session, we need to know what type of hat the lucky name is
drawn from. This is VERY important.

So ... In the early days of Five on Friday, I started using scraps of paper
that were pulled from a Backpacker magazine baseball cap.

But the scraps were kind of a pain, so I switched to a new system. I write
the names of the official entries on a sheet of paper, discarding those who
used a first name only or a joke name (Ben Dover) and those who send lists
that are off topic (someone sent a list of pro team mascots this week).

I divide them into groups of six and then roll a die, circling a winner from
each group of six. Then I roll the die to pick a prize winner from the bunch
of preliminary winners. It's kind of like Strat-o-Matic Baseball (if you
don't know what that is, ask someone who was a boy in the '60s).

It's random, fair and easy.

By the way, here's the little-known pre-history of Five on Friday. About
four years ago, some of us in the features department were making our lists
of favorite movies (or something like that). I came up with the idea of
picking a topic and giving everyone five minutes to come up with a top five.
We called it Five in Five and did it most weeks late Friday afternoon.

Then my boss suggested we find a way to make it a reader participation
contest. Darn bosses ... always taking something that's fun and turning it
into work!

Cheers!
