Charlie Sheen tour: Less of a torpedo, more of a bomb, reviewers say
April 3, 2011

The reviews are in and the consensus is clear: Charlie Sheen’s Detroit tour opener was a total bomb.

Sheen's disorganized spectacle left many in the sold-out Fox Theatre crowd asking for a refund.

Here is a round-up of what some are saying online today about the troubled actor’s “My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option” tour, which continues in Chicago tonight.

David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter called the stunt “a blatantly cynical attempt to cash in on his craziness.” He continues:

“Sheen’s haphazard act was neither standup nor confessional memoir, despite repeated promises that he was going to dig deep and dish secrets. It was closer to a motivational seminar, but one in which the speaker was also the key beneficiary. Early in the evening, before the crowd turned sour, there was a creepy atmosphere that suggested group indoctrination into a cult.”

Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times said Sheen “had no ability as a live performer.” He writes:

“Honesty is Sheen's touted value, so here goes: He didn’t bring the goods, and no amount of pandering to the spectators with his you-and-me against-the-trolls malarkey could convince them otherwise. The Malibu messiah’s stab at demagoguery died a quick and not entirely painless death.”

USA Today’s Ann Oldenburg said Sheen’s tour “took a giant nose-dive Saturday night.”

“He ran a video mash-up of his now-famous interviews, he offered to "tell stories about crack," he tried to take questions from the audience. Nothing worked. When someone asked about AA, he didn't answer. When someone asked about porn stars, he didn't come up with anything interesting. Finally a woman said she wanted a hug. She got that. But Sheen probably needed it as much as she did at that point.”

Bernie Woodall from Reuters: “Sheen and his troupe proved awkward at best. Fans had thought they might hear inside stories of the drug-and-drink-fueled parties and wild nights that hospitalized him and sent him to rehab.

“But they never heard a single tale and nearly every one of Sheen’s monologues and comedy skits had to be aborted due Sheen’s inability to handle the rowdy, unhappy audience.”

The Guardian’s Hadley Freeman used her Sheen review to also take a swipe at Detroit. She writes:

“It was both poignant and appropriate for the former A-list Hollywood star to begin his sell-out tour in Detroit. Now less of a city and more a symbol of the death of American industry, this former hub of car manufacturing is dying. Last week, the US census report revealed that Detroit's population had dropped by a quarter in the past decade and the city's mayor was reduced to begging for a recount in the hope of bringing it up enough to qualify the city for increased state and federal aid.”

he is going to be in cleveland tonight.
I should go, expect deep dark (shocking) secrets, demand medical breakthroughs,
become irritated at his lackluster performance, step outside,
start smoking, and bitch about wasting my money.
