Jackie Brown Prequel Planned
Now Filming - Project will go ahead without Tarantino
May 25, 2010
If, like us, you're a Tarantino fan, there's a good chance that you already know his 1997 film Jackie Brown was based on Elmore Leonard's crime novel Rum Punch. However, it's less well-known that characters Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara, played by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro respectively, originated from Lenoard's earlier novel The Switch. And this little piece of trivia is about to become pretty significant, as it was announced yesterday that The Switch will become a prequel adaptation to Jackie Brown.
Although Tarantino has apparently given his blessing to the film, he won't be involved with the project, which will come as a blow to many fans. The director has said in the past that The Switch was a huge inspiration to him, despite not being the novel he eventually adapted, so it's disappointing to hear that he won't be involved in this. Furthermore, as the story focuses on younger versions of Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara, it seems unlikely that Jackson and De Niro will reprise their roles either.
But with new writer Daniel Schechter's screenplay already finished and producer Michael Siegel (who also produced Be Cool, an adaptation of another of Leonard's novels and the sequel to a further adaptation of his work, Get Shorty) on board, the project looks promising. It should be interesting to see how the new movie, with a different director and fresh acting talent, matches up with Tarantino's presentation of the characters.
