It sucks sometmes but "when in rome". The United Staes of America is extremely diverse. Like, I said, Every state has their own little world although, they all must follow and adhere to federal guidelines that bind us as a country.
State lines in the U.S. have been drawn along geometrical lines for the most part based on bounderies of geographical features such as river systems and mountains. Later in history as we fed our need for greed and hunger for land, we may have altered the limits of state lines by craps and roulette
The middle east is a relec of a term for the area carved up by joint allied interest in WW1. After the war, they allies tried to border off the region by ethnicity, tribes and beliefs, whether be Christians, Jews, Muslim sunnis shi'is or whatever.
I do not think that the bordership of the region is in any way the same as the way the US is split or even in the same way the UK is split. Even though we share responsibility for "carving" it up together, I couldn't say , you tell me.
